Instagram Is Not Your Website

Artist & Gallery Resources

By Mark Shapiro | The Art Fair Advantage

One of the biggest misconceptions in the art world today is that an Instagram account can replace a professional website.

It cannot.

Now before anyone gets upset, let me be clear:

I love Instagram.

It is one of the most powerful marketing tools artists have ever had access to. It allows you to share your work, tell your story, build an audience, and connect with collectors around the world.

But Instagram is not your website.

And if you are serious about building a long-term art career, you need both.

Instagram Is a Social Platform

Your website is your business platform.

There is a big difference.

Instagram is designed to keep people scrolling.

Your website is designed to keep people focused on you.

When a collector visits your website, there are no competing artists, advertisements, trending videos, or distractions.

They are looking at your work.

Your story.

Your accomplishments.

Your collection.

That matters.

What Happens When a Collector Wants More?

Picture this:

A collector visits your booth at an art fair.

They like your work.

They take your card.

Later that evening, they search for you online.

What happens next?

If they find a professional website, they gain confidence.

They can:

View your portfolio
Read your biography
Learn about your process
See available works
Review your exhibition history
Contact you directly

If they only find an Instagram account, they may still follow you, but they may also miss important information.

Instagram can create interest.

Your website can create confidence.

You Do Not Own Instagram

This is something every artist should understand.

Instagram can change.

Algorithms change.

Features change.

Accounts get hacked.

Accounts disappear.

Visibility can rise or fall overnight.

Your website is digital real estate that you control.

Nobody can suddenly reduce your visibility because an algorithm changed.

That does not mean Instagram is bad.

It means Instagram should not be your only platform.

Use Instagram to Drive Traffic

The smartest artists use Instagram as a gateway.

Post:

Studio updates
New work
Behind-the-scenes content
Art fair announcements
Collector installations
Short videos
Process images
Available artwork previews

Then direct people to your website.

Your website should become the destination.

That is where collectors can slow down, learn more, and take the next step.

What Every Artist Website Should Include

At a minimum, your website should include:

Home page
Artist biography
Artist statement
Portfolio
Available artwork, if appropriate
Upcoming exhibitions
Contact page
Social media links

That is enough to establish credibility.

You do not need the most complicated website.

You need a clean, current, professional one.

Make Everything Work Together

Your Instagram should feel like your website.

Your website should feel like your booth.

Your booth should feel like your artwork.

Everything should support the same story.

Use consistent images, colors, language, tone, and presentation whenever possible.

Collectors remember consistency.

Consistency creates trust.

My Final Thought

Instagram is a wonderful marketing tool.

But it is rented space.

Your website is your home.

Build both.

Maintain both.

And make it easy for collectors to find you wherever they begin their journey.

See you on the show floor.
