30-Day Social Countdown Strategy
Pre-Show Art Fair Sale Advice
By Mark Shapiro | The Art Fair Advantage
One of my favorite questions to ask artists before an art fair is:
“Why wait until opening day to show people what you have been creating?”
In 2026, social media is no longer just advertising.
It is storytelling.
And one of the smartest things an artist or gallery owner can do before an art fair is create a simple countdown strategy.
The goal is clear:
Build excitement before people ever walk into your booth.
Think Like a Movie Trailer
Do not reveal everything at once.
Create anticipation.
Your followers should feel like they are being invited behind the curtain. A good countdown gives people a reason to pay attention before the fair opens.
I suggest building your content in stages.
30 Days Before: Post a Teaser
Start with something simple.
Post:
A close-up detail of a painting
A corner of a sculpture
A cropped image of a new work
A studio image
A short caption that says: “Coming to Booth ___”
You do not need to explain everything yet. The point is to let people know something is coming.
21 Days Before: Show the Process
Collectors love seeing how artwork comes together.
Share:
Artwork on the easel
Paint on your hands
Studio moments
Framing and finishing
Materials and tools
Short behind-the-scenes videos
People connect with process. It helps them feel closer to the work before they ever see it in person.
14 Days Before: Reveal More
Now begin showing the collection more clearly.
Post:
A complete piece
A small group of works
A collection coming together
Wall mockups
Framing details
Packaging and preparation
This is the time to help your audience understand the direction of the work and why it belongs together.
7 Days Before: Show Movement
This is one of my favorite stages.
Show that the fair is becoming real.
Photograph or film:
Artwork being loaded into the vehicle
Crates being packed
Labels being prepared
Your drive to the fair
Arrival at the venue
Installation beginning
This tells people:
Something important is happening.
Consider a Pre-Show Opportunity
Here is something artists rarely think about.
Give your audience a reason to act early.
Examples include:
First viewing appointments
Early access to available inventory
Reserved collector previews
Complimentary tickets
Priority selection opportunities
You do not always need to discount.
Sometimes the incentive is simply access.
If you choose to offer financial consideration, think carefully. Options may include:
Complimentary framing
Delivery credit
Special package pricing for multiple acquisitions
First-choice purchasing rights
Protect the value of your work. The goal is to create interest, not train people to wait for discounts.
Keep the Story Consistent
Your countdown should reflect your artistic voice.
If your artwork feels elegant, your social media should feel elegant.
If your work feels bold, your content should feel energetic.
Every post should feel connected to the booth, the artwork, and the story you want collectors to remember.
My Final Thought
By opening day, people should already know your booth exists.
They should feel curious.
They should feel invested.
They should want to see what happens next.
Art fairs begin long before the doors open.
Start the countdown.
See you on the show floor.
