Collector List

Building Your Collector List One Conversation at a Time

Post-Show Follow-Up

By Mark Shapiro | The Art Fair Advantage

One of the biggest mistakes artists make at art fairs is thinking their success is measured only by what sells during the weekend.

I understand why.

Sales matter.

But after more than 40 years in galleries, art fairs, and fine art sales, I can tell you that some of the most important opportunities happen after the show ends.

That's because art fairs are not just selling events.

They're relationship-building events.

Every meaningful conversation is an opportunity to grow your collector list.

And over time, your collector list may become one of the most valuable assets in your art business.

Every Visitor Is Not a Buyer—Yet

A collector may love your work but not be ready to purchase today.

Perhaps they're:

That doesn't mean the conversation failed.

It means the relationship has just begun.

The goal is not to pressure someone into buying.

The goal is to stay connected.

Start Conversations Naturally

One of the easiest ways to build a collector list is simply by being curious.

Ask questions such as:

People enjoy talking about themselves.

And these conversations often reveal valuable information.

Capture Information Professionally

If someone expresses interest, make it easy to stay in touch.

Options include:

Collect:

A simple note such as:

"Interested in coastal landscapes. New home in Florida."

can become incredibly useful months later.

Organize Your Contacts

Not every contact belongs in the same category.

Create groups such as:

The better organized your list, the more meaningful your follow-up becomes.

Stay Connected

After the fair, continue the relationship.

Share:

The goal is to remain visible without becoming intrusive.

Think Long-Term

Building a collector list is not about this weekend.

It's about the next year.

The next five years.

And the next decade.

My Final Thought

One collector.

One conversation.

One relationship.

Repeated consistently over time.

That's how art careers are built.

Don't just count sales.

Count connections.

Because today's conversation may become tomorrow's collector.

See you on the show floor.
