Why Labels, Pricing, Branding, and Signage Matter

Booth Presentation Tips

By Mark Shapiro | The Art Fair Advantage

One of the biggest mistakes I see artists and galleries make at art fairs has nothing to do with the artwork.

It is what happens around the artwork.

Beautiful booth.

Beautiful paintings.

And then…

Handwritten labels.

No pricing.

Three different fonts.

No logo.

No website.

No booth identity.

Collectors notice.

After decades in galleries and art fairs, I have learned something simple:

Professional presentation creates confidence.

Your labels, pricing, branding, and signage are not decoration.

They are part of the artwork experience.

Your Booth Is an Extension of You

Your booth should feel intentional.

Think about your favorite luxury brands.

Everything feels connected.

Typography.

Color.

Packaging.

Presentation.

Artists and galleries should think the same way.

Before the fair, ask yourself:

Do I have a recognizable logo?
Do my labels match my website?
Are my fonts consistent?
Do I use the same color palette?
Do I know my brand colors?
Would someone recognize my booth from across the aisle?

This matters because people remember consistency.

A booth that feels visually connected creates trust before the conversation even begins.

Labels Remove Friction

Collectors do not enjoy guessing.

Every piece should include a professional label.

My recommendation is simple:

Title
Artist name
Medium
Dimensions
Price

Optional information may include:

QR code
Collection name
Short statement
Website or Instagram handle

Pricing should be clear whenever possible.

One of the fastest ways to lose a collector is making them uncomfortable asking basic questions.

Price transparency creates trust.

Signage Builds Recognition

Your booth sign should not compete with your artwork.

It should support it.

Think clean, simple, and readable.

Good booth signage usually includes:

One font family
One logo
One accent color
Consistent spacing
Matching label design

If your artwork is elegant, your signage should feel elegant.

If your work is contemporary, your booth identity should reflect that.

The goal is not to overbrand the booth.

The goal is to make the presentation feel finished.

Your Branding Should Continue Beyond the Booth

This is where artists often miss opportunities.

Your booth identity should connect to your:

Business cards
Website
Social media
Email signature
QR code
Packaging
Invoices
Certificates of Ownership
Certificates of Authenticity

I like to see consistency and a theme that resonates with viewers and collectors.

Your collector should feel like they have entered your world, not visited ten different personalities.

When your booth, website, labels, and follow-up materials all feel connected, buyers sense professionalism.

My Final Thought

Collectors may forget your booth number.

But they remember how your booth felt.

Professional labels create clarity.

Professional branding creates confidence.

Professional signage creates trust.

And trust helps artwork feel important.

Your booth may only be temporary, but the impression it creates can last much longer.

It is your gallery for the weekend.

Make every detail count.

See you on the show floor.
