Close Professionally
How to Close a Sale Professionally
At-Show Sales Advice
By Mark Shapiro | The Art Fair Advantage
One of the most misunderstood parts of exhibiting at an art fair is closing the sale.
Many artists believe closing means becoming a salesperson.
It does not.
After decades in galleries and art fairs, I have learned something that may surprise you:
Most art sales are not lost because the collector said no.
They are lost because nobody helped the collector say yes.
Closing professionally is not pressure.
It is helping someone feel comfortable enough to move forward.
Recognize When the Collector Is Ready
Collectors rarely announce:
“I am buying this.”
Usually, the signals are quieter.
You may hear:
“Would this fit over a sofa?”
“Do you ship?”
“Can I see another angle?”
“Do you offer delivery?”
“Can I think about it and come back?”
“How would payment work?”
Those are not just casual questions.
They are ownership questions.
The collector has already started imagining life with the artwork.
Your job now is clarity.
Stop Selling. Start Guiding.
One of my favorite approaches is simple:
Answer the question directly.
Then pause.
For example:
Collector:
“What happens if I decide to take this?”
You:
“Wonderful. We can process everything here and arrange whichever delivery option works best for you.”
Simple.
Professional.
No pressure.
You are not pushing.
You are making the next step feel easy.
Make the Buying Process Easy
Be prepared before the fair opens.
Have:
Invoice forms
Certificates of Ownership
Certificates of Authenticity, if applicable
Business cards
Packaging materials
Payment options
Shipping information
QR payment methods
Collector contact forms
A clear delivery plan
Nothing destroys excitement faster than appearing unprepared.
Collectors want confidence.
If the sale feels organized, the collector feels safer moving forward.
Confirm the Details
Before finalizing the sale, review the important information.
Confirm:
Title
Artist
Dimensions
Medium
Price
Framing, if included
Delivery timeline
Payment method
Collector contact information
Make the experience feel polished.
This is not just paperwork.
This is part of the collector experience.
A professional close reassures the buyer that they made a good decision.
Celebrate, But Stay Professional
You do not need fireworks.
A sincere response works beautifully.
Try:
“Thank you for choosing this piece.”
Or:
“I am excited this work connected with you.”
Or:
“I think this is going to look wonderful in your space.”
Collectors appreciate feeling appreciated.
Not pressured.
Create the Next Relationship
This part matters.
Do not let the relationship end at payment.
Ask:
“Would you like updates when new collections are released?”
Or:
“May I follow up after delivery to make sure everything arrived properly?”
One collector can become:
Repeat business
Multiple acquisitions
Referrals
Commissions
Introductions
Future art fair visits
The first sale is important.
The relationship after the sale may be even more valuable.
My Final Thought
Your booth should feel professional.
Your process should feel easy.
Your close should feel natural.
Because closing the sale is not about convincing.
It is about making ownership feel effortless.
See you on the show floor.
