Choosing Your Booth Size

Small, Smart, or Statement?

Pre-Show Art Fairs Sales Advice

By Mark Shapiro | The Art Fair Advantage

One of the first questions artists ask me before an art fair is:

“Mark, what booth size should I choose?”

After many years working in art fairs and helping artists and galleries select exhibition spaces, my answer is usually the same:

Choose the booth that supports your goals, not your ego.

Bigger is not always better.

And smaller does not mean less successful.

A well-curated small booth can outperform a larger booth that feels crowded, confusing, or unfocused.

Start With Your Artwork Inventory

Before selecting a booth, ask yourself:

How many pieces am I planning to exhibit?
What are the dimensions of each work?
Are they framed?
Do they need breathing room?
Am I bringing sculpture, bins, pedestals, or display furniture?
How much space do I need for visitors to step in and look comfortably?

Here is one of my basic rules:

Never choose booth size based only on how much art you own. Choose based on how much art deserves to be shown.

I like to see consistency and a clear theme that resonates with viewers and collectors. Your booth should feel intentional, not overfilled.

Small SOLO Booth

4' x 10'
Approx. 40 sq ft

This size can work well for:

First-time exhibitors
Emerging artists
Focused collections
Smaller originals
Works on paper
Limited editions
A tightly edited series

A small booth teaches discipline. You cannot hang everything, and that can be a good thing. It forces you to make stronger choices.

Medium SOLO Booth

4' x 15'
Approx. 60 sq ft

This size can work well for:

Artists with a larger body of work
A more developed series
Better visual spacing
A stronger gallery-style presentation
A mix of larger and smaller pieces

This is often one of my favorite recommendations because the additional wall space gives collectors more room to absorb individual works. It also allows the booth to feel less crowded and more professional.

Statement SOLO Booth

4' x 20'
Approx. 80 sq ft

This size can work well for:

Large-format work
Established artists
A stronger visual impact
Storytelling across a full wall
A more ambitious presentation

Sometimes spending more for additional space creates a dramatically better booth. The added wall area can give your work breathing room, create a stronger first impression, and help collectors understand the full story of your presentation.

Think About Transportation

Booth size is not only about wall space. It also affects your logistics.

Ask yourself:

Am I driving to the show?
Am I shipping the work?
Will I need crates?
Will I need extra packing materials?
Will I need help with setup?
Will I need additional insurance?

Larger booths often mean more artwork, more freight, more packing, longer setup time, and greater responsibility.

Sometimes the smartest booth is not the biggest one. It is the one that lets you present professionally without stretching your budget too far.

My Final Thought

Imagine a collector walking by your booth.

Would they stop?

Would they understand your point of view?

Would your booth feel like a professional exhibition?

Choose the booth size that lets your artwork breathe and supports the story you want to tell.

Collectors buy confidence.

See you on the show floor.
